Nida Mahmood designing for TV show
Nida MahmoodShe is young and innovative and after showing her designs on the ramp, Nida Mahmood has moved to the small screen and has styled the wardrobe for the lead character of an upcoming fictional soap. Though the young designer is tight-lipped about the details, she does reveal the clothes will be very ‘Nida Mahmood’ type - young and quirky and the project was all the more exciting for her as she was styling for a male wardrobe after a gap. "I started my fashion journey by making men’s wear, but for the past two years I have been showcasing women’s line on the ramp. I was given the option of designing for the lead female character as well, but I opted for lead male character," said Mahmood.

"For the past two years, I wanted to launch my men’s wear line, but I was caught up in so many things. Finally, when I got this opportunity, I just thought, this is the right time," added the young designer who is quite fond of Bollywood’s retro era which is often seen in her collections.

The channel is known for youth–centric reality shows like ‘Emotional Atyachar’, but Mahmood reveals this project is going to be a fictional soap and the channel’s biggest production ever.

Sarah Burton launches 2nd McQueen collection
Sarah Burton launches 2nd McQueen collectionFashion designer Sarah Burton unveiled her second menswear collection for Alexander McQueen at Milan’s Menswear Fashion Week. The designer, who was named as the label’s creative director last year following the tragic suicide of its founder Alexander McQueen, built on her debut range with oversized coats and capes which played on texture, with leather and fur enlivening the classic wool shapes. Red, cream, mustard and black shades dominated proceedings. Other fashion houses who showcased their collection, included Gucci, who stuck to what they know best - suave Italian dressing, in shades of grey, while Versace’s collection was dominated by black, leather belts and patterned knits.

While Gucci and Versace stuck to grey and black, D&G brightened up proceedings with colourful gilets and Mickey Mouse print emblazoned skinny jeans.

Nida Mahmood to showcase her designs at London
Fashion designer Nida MahmoodFashion designer Nida Mahmood, best known for her quirky and Indian-kitsch inspired collections, has been invited to showcase her work at London’s popular Victoria and Albert Museum. The project is scheduled for 2012, and the musuem is putting together a perspective on Indian pop art focusing on Mahmood’s collection. While the designer is yet to dig into all the details, she is quite excited about meeting the exhibition’s curator in the capital. "I still have to know a lot of details. I just woke up groggily in the morning and saw this e-mail on my phone. I felt some friend was pulling a fast one on me but then I found out it is for real! It is just as big as it gets, and its flattering," said Mahmood. "The organisers told me that they have been following my work and feel that I truly represent Indian popular culture. The exhibit is quite huge, so they want to discuss and plan everything much ahead in advance," she added.

Mahmood has in the past launched collections like ‘High On Chai’, ‘Sadak Chhaap’ and ‘Bioscope’, taking cues from everyday life and represented the colourful flavours of India through saris, dresses and even accessories.

Her most recent collection, Maachis, was showcased at last month’s Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) spring-summer edition here. It had imprints of colourful matchboxes that are available at almost every nook and corner in the country.

"I find inspiration from all simple things of life. Like matchboxes, they are small and are priced at Rs.1 - but they have the power to destroy or celebrate. I like everything that is mundane and boring and try to make it dramatic," Mahmood had said after showcasing her collection.

Now she is glad her work will be shown in London. "They want to take our work and fashion sensibilities to a global platform and I am glad we are being noticed for the right things. I do sell a lot in London. One of my collections was completely sold out in a London store. There is a big market for Indian designers abroad," she added.
