Pt Bhimsen Joshi to be honored with Bharat Ratna

Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has been chosen for the prestigious Bharat Ratna award. What makes this achievement all the more special is the fact that after a gap of seven years, the Government has selected a performing artist for this highest civilian award in the country.

Prior to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi other performing artists who have been honored with the Bharat Ratna include shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan, veteran playback singer Lata Mangeshkar and Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has had a distinguished career spanning for more than seven decades in which he has enthralled audiences world over. In fact, he has even been the proud recipient of numerous prestigious awards such as the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri.

The 86 year old legendary vocalist naturally seemed delighted on being bestowed with the highest civilian award and humbly accepted the award on behalf of all the exponents of Indian classical music.
