The distinguished Indian economist, philosopher and Nobel Laureate, Amartya Sen attended the world premiere of a stunning new film, Colours Of Passion (Rang Rasiya) which was held at the London Film Festival yesterday (Oct 30). Written and directed by one of India's most acclaimed director's, Ketan Mehta, Colours Of Passion is the tale of the life and times of the great and controversial, Indian painter, Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906). It deals with religious intolerance and denial of freedom of expression by fundamentalists and hardliners - sadly a fact even today.

The film features two of the finest Indian actors in the lead, with Randeep Hooda as the artist, with Nandana Sen as his muse. Nandana, who is the daughter of the economist, from his first marriage to Nabaneeta Dev Sen, an Indian writer and poet; plays Sugandha, a young woman, whose beauty captivates Varma and inspires him to create exquisite paintings based on themes from Indian mythology and classic literature. She becomes his inspiration...his love.

Amartya Sen, 74, who is world renowned for his work on famine, human development theory, poverty, political liberalism and gender inequality, received the Nobel Prize in 1998, "for his contribution to welfare economics". He was born in Shantiniketan, educated at Presidency College, Calcutta and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was also the Master from 1998 - 2004. Shriya Saran and Tara Sharma enters Hollywood
Shriya Saran, Tara Sharma and Anupam Kher are going to star in the forthcoming Hollywood film, The Other End Of the Line.

Unlike the stereotyped crossover movies which deal with NRI families in the western countries, The Other End Of the Line shows Shriya playing a credit card company's customer service manager who lives in India, and like any other call-centre employee, she pretends to be American to her callers. But as luck would have it, she falls in love with an American caller played by Jesse Metcalfe (of 'The Desperate Housewives' fame). She then decides to take adventurous trip to USA without informing her parents, played by Anupam Kher and Sushmita Mukherjee. The film has its breath-taking moments when, even though, after meeting Jesse, Shriya decides not to reveal her true identity to him (Shriya tells him that she is from San Francisco).

The story takes yet another twist when Shriya's parents reach States and bring her back home and our American hero is left wondering what to do next. The film is yet another love story between an Indian girl and an American boy, though it would be interesting to see how the subject is dealt with this time. This is Shriya's first Hollywood film and her performance strikes you looking at the promo. And also, there's a hot steamy kiss between the Shriya and Jesse to look forward to.

Produced by Ashok Amritraj, The Other End Of the Line is being directed by James Dodson.

Aishwarya Rai gears up for action
After all that controversy over the name, the film, which was formerly known as Robot, starring Rajnikant and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, has now been titled Endhiran. Besides the new title, also being added to the film, its action is Chinese style.

It appears that director S Shankar, who was originally supposed Chinese stunt director Woo ping Yuen to supervise the action sequences in the film. For those who have not been able to place the name, Yuen's is the creative brain behind the phenomenal stunts of Hollywood films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Kill Bill and the Matrix series and The Forbidden Kingdom.

He has directed actors like Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun Fat, Uma Thurman, Keanu Reeves, Jet Li and Jackie Chang. By managing to rope in Yeuh, Shankar has managed to fulfill his desire to have slick, never seen before action sequences.

The film is reportedly being made on a stupendous budget of Rs 140 crore, probably one of the most expensive films being made in India. It is also believed that Ash is reportedly being paid something to the tune of Rs 6 crore for the movie.

Shankar is the same director who made Sivaji: the Boss with Rajnikat earlier. The film's shooting is in progress in Peru. The film is expected to release by the April of 2010.

Preity Zinta chosen Best Actress at Chicago International Film Festival
After Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta is the second Indian actress to ever win an award at the Chicago International Film Festival. After winning accolades at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, Preity's risk in taking on a role like Chand in Heaven on Earth has definitely payed off.

"I am so happy and excited. I'm going to have a blissfully debauched celebration this evening. It was my director Deepa Mehta who informed me on Saturday afternoon that I had won. Neither Deepa nor I could go to Chicago, I'm thrilled that I've done it without any lobbying," she says.

Director Deepa Mehta is equally thrilled and describes Preity as 'luminous' in the film. Mehta is currently promoting her film in Canada as the film released this past Friday to great reviews.

Adds Deepa Mehta, "It's amazing, isn't it? I'm so happy for Preity. She's luminous in Heaven On Earth...just like Shabana Azmi in Fire. Coincidentally, Shabana was the other actress to win the Best Actress Award at Chicago. I don't think any other Indian actress has won this award. I'm happy Preity is getting rave reviews for Heroes. I've seen bits of her performance in Heroes. And in fact it was that performance which reassured me that I had made the right choice for Heaven On Earth."

Preity, on the other hand, is finally seeing her hard work pay off. After playing similar candyfloss roles in several films, Preity opted for a change with films like The Last Lear, Heaven on Earth and Heroes. For Heroes, Preity has been praised immensely as well.

What really pleases Preity is that this international award will help sell Heaven On Earth to a global audience. "It is a film in Punjabi and I felt the language would limit the appeal. But trust Deepa to break the cultural barriers."

"I'm walking on sunshine. Do you know everyone discouraged me from doing Heaven On Earth and Heroes? But I wanted a change," she adds.
