"They were thorough professionals as producers and streamlined everything so well. It was a memorable experience working on ‘Dil Chahta Hai’. We had loads of fun shooting the film in Goa and I will never forget celebrating my birthday with the cast and crew in Goa," she added.

Bhumi Pednekar believes Society Holds Negativity to A Heroine

Women-oriented films and strong female characters may be the latest trend in Bollywood, but Bhumi Pednekar believes society still holds regressive views towards a heroine.

The 28-year-old actor, who delivered a Masterclass on 'Breaking Stereotypes' at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (IFFI), said a strong and confident woman is always labeled as "difficult".

In an interview Bhumi said, "Everywhere in the society, even my extended family, when they got to know that I am going to be an actor, they were very worried because there is a lot of negativity attached to my craft or being a heroine."

"I feel in our culture, the girl, with any sort of power is called difficult or various words that are demeaning just because she has a voice, has confidence and stands for her rights. It is sad, but it is the truth of our country. Our culture hasn't evolved much and we need to do something about it."

The actor believes cinema for long has also failed women by viewing female characters according to the male gaze.

"In terms of the treatment of a female actor on-screen, we have gone backwards and how. We had actors like Devika Rani when cinema started in India and suddenly things became regressive. Women had nothing to do in films except praying for their husband's well-being."

Bhumi added, "I am not against traditions, but they are not meant to be regressive. It is heartbreaking to see the kind of atrocities women are suffering across the globe. As human beings, we need to evolve with time and if you fail to do that, your existence will suffer."

After her successful debut with 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha', the actor said she rejected around 23 scripts as the female character had nothing to do in the proposed projects.

Bhumi is glad that after featuring in the role of an overweight woman in the Sharat Katariya-directed movie, she was not stereotyped.

"Cinema has the power to change the society. Through my films, the kind of characters I have played and will play, I am trying to do my bit in changing the patriarchal mindset. I am vocal about my thoughts which I think will somewhere help in bringing about a change."

This year she delivered two hits - 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' and 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' and Bhumi will soon start filming director Abhishek Chaubey's next, titled 'Chambal'.

Kalki Koechlin believes Celebrities Should Not Give Opinions

Kalki Koechlin has always been vocal about her views on various social issues, but the actor believes celebrities should not give opinions on serious subjects unless they are well-versed with them. The actor said there is always a risk associated with being a public figure as there are chances of one's views being misinterpreted.

Kalki said, "I believe when a celebrity voices an opinion, there are chances for it to be taken out of context. I feel if a celeb is voicing his/her opinion on something they should personally relate to the subject. If they just put a face to the cause, without knowing about it, it doesn't serve the purpose."

"But, I agree with the fact that when a public figure supports a cause, it makes a big impact. It involves a lot of people and gives confidence to others to talk about the issue. But ultimately the change comes from the entire community. Branding by a celeb is just a seed," she adds.

Kalki said she is growing as an artiste and has found novel approach to express herself.

"I don't have any complaints and I am happy about the experiences. I am constantly evolving as an actor. I have found new ways of expressing myself."

Kalki will next be seen in a guest appearance in 'Candyflip', a film directed by Shanawaz Nellikunnil. The movie is set in Goa and chronicles the story of the protagonist (played by Prashant Prakash), who flips out when he is introduced to drugs by his close friend.

"I play a posh British vegan girl who comes to Goa for the first time. This girl is kind of an illusion; you don't know whether she is real or not. The main character, played by Prashant, keeps seeing her," the actor said.

"The darker side of drugs, the psychological issues which happen due to drugs people hardly talk about it. Drugs are at times glorified. It is important to educate young people about what drugs are. I believe people need to be aware even if they are taking it," she said.

Zareen Khan to land in a legal suit

Zareen Khan was recently seen in ‘Aksar 2’ and the actress has found herself into a tussle with the producer, Narendra Bajaj for calling the film ‘vulgar’.

Zareen said that she was assured that it would be a clean film but was asked to wear minimal clothes in each frame. The producer is highly upset with Zareen’s defamatory remarks and wants to drag her to the court.

According to Bajaj, the script was discussed with the actress well in advance and she never raised any issues then.

This is not the first time that the actress was seen wearing skimpy and tantalizing outfits onscreen. She flaunted her curves in ‘Hate Story 3’ too.

Vidya Balan Impressed with Manushi Chhillar’s Winning Reply

Vidya Balan is ecstatic about Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar's answer in the final question-answer round at the Miss World contest in China.

"Manushi's answer underlined what we were trying to say in my recent film. People have acknowledged that a mother and homemaker's contribution is always undervalued and it has diminished further after women started stepping out to earn," says Vidya,

She added further, "People only value what they pay for. If they started paying a mother a salary, the family would go bankrupt. Manushi's answer was bang on. It's not the cash; it's the respect and love you must show towards the mother for what she does silently, every single day. Universally, the energies are coming together. Maybe, mothers and homemakers will get their dues now."

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari to Explore New Ideas

The popularity of 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' surprised Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari but the director does not want the baggage of its success to overshadow her future work. Ashwiny, whose first film 'Nil Battey Sannata' (2016) also received a great response from the audience, has already moved on to her next project, based on kabaddi.

Though the director remains tight-lipped about the yet- untitled film, she is certain about not approaching it with any kind of baggage.

"I have never done that. When 'Nil Battey Sannata' happened people thought I would make a women-oriented film again but ''Bareilly Ki Barfi' happened. Similarly, I am trying to explore and challenge myself with different kinds of ideas, which even the audience will enjoy watching," she told.

While it is hard to tell how the audience will respond to a particular story, Ashwiny believes a director can gauge where a film is going in the first week of the shoot.

"Most of the times, in your first week of the film's shooting, when the rushes come in and you see it at the edit table, you already know where your film is heading. In your first week, it becomes clear," said Ashwiny.

Aditi Rao Hydari Feels The Need To Be Dignified

Actresses in the industry believe in speaking their mind. In the recent past, the industry's leading ladies have been vocal about issues ranging from nepotism to feminism.

While Aditi Rao Hydari agrees that it's important to speak up and speak out against anything that plagues society, she also maintains that one should air one's opinion with grace.

“A lot of actresses in the industry say what they believe in. They are strong, opinionated and speak with dignity. With others, it becomes a sort of mud-slinging. That's a choice that one has to make. There should be a sense of dignity to what one is saying, so that people respect what is being said and pay heed."

She continued, "Actresses like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut have been vocal about things that they feel strongly about. Everybody does it in their own way.”

‘Padmavati’ Release Date To Be Postponed

After months of silently dealing with a number of controversies propagated by various fringe groups, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali came on record to crush allegations about his film ‘Padmavati’. In a video message, the director assured everyone that his film upholds the honour of the Rajputs and does not depict anything that may hurt anyone's sentiments.

However, if latest reports are anything to go by then the makers of the historical drama are allegedly being pressured to postpone the release of the film, citing political reasons. According to online reports, the makers have been intimated by members of the ruling party in Gujarat to delay the release because of the upcoming assembly elections on December 9 and 14. The party allegedly doesn’t want to lose the favor of the right-wing groups, who are opposing the release of the film. However, no official communication has been sent out to the producers.

Calling the film ‘Padmavati’ a “tribute to the sacrifice, valour and honour of Rani Padmavati,” Sanjay shared a video that featured him saying, "I've made this film 'Padmavati' with a lot of sincerity, responsibility and hard work. I have always been inspired by Rani Padmavati's story and this film salutes her valour and sacrifice. But because of some rumours, this film has become a subject of controversy."

Pointing out that the root cause of the trouble was an alleged dream sequence involving Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s characters, he said, “Through this video, I am reiterating that in our film, Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji have no such scene together which will hurt anyone's sentiments.”

The film that stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in leading roles is expected to release as scheduled on December 1.

Tete-a-Tete With Vidya Balan on Tumhari Sulu

Settled in a cozy white cabin on a hot Wednesday afternoon in Mumbai, Vidya Balan is like her character in her new film, Tumhari Sulu - warm, fun, happy and carefree.

The actress sips water from her mason jar as she complains about the heat in the city.

With an infectious smile, she candidy discusses her film .

You said Tumhari Sulu is a breezy film and you were dying to shoot it. How was the experience?

It was exceptional.

Firstly, because of her character, I identify with her a lot. I am just like her - restless and waiting to try out new things, to move on, get ahead, looking for reasons to smile, laugh.

She laughs at herself and at others. I could identify with that trait.

She is one of those who will say, 'Main kar sakti hoon' (I can do it).

She is happy being a homemaker but she also wants to try different things. It was so refreshing because my past few films have been serious.

It was all in the script and (director) Suresh Triveni has done a marvellous job. He brought the character alive.

Working under his direction was an amazing experience. Every unit member was invested in this film because Suresh kept the environment like that.

Since Sulu's character is relatable. Is that one of the reasons why you signed up for this film?

With every character, I need a point of identification. Only then I can play her.

I found Sulu very relatable because I come from a middle class family. I know what it is like when you are happy with what you have.

I have grown up with my family in Chembur (in suburban Mumbai). It wasn't like we had to travel abroad, have cars; we were absolutely content with whatever we had.

It never struck me that I should move out of that place.

I love that bit about Sulu. She is not a housewife who is bogged down by responsibilities, family or is lonely. She has a zest for life. Sulu is an enthu cutlet!

What is the most interesting thing about Sulu?

You think of her as someone who is sexy, sultry and intimate, especially since she is an RJ. You imagine her a certain way.

You don't imagine her to be someone clad in a sari; even if she is in a sari, you think of her wearing a low-cut blouse, with her hair blowing in the breeze. But she is not sexualized that way (laughs).

Does being sexy come naturally to you?

As a matter of fact, I thought we would shoot and then Suresh would get the sensual bits dubbed later.

But he was shocked that I even asked him about that.

I told him, 'You want it to sound sexy, na?'

So he asked, 'Did you hear yourself?'

I was like, 'Really...?'

It was kind of effortless. I didn't think about anything. I just tried talking in a slightly husky tone.

How was it working with Manav Kaul?

Incredible!

I had seen him in Kai Po Che and felt he was amazing.

But I didn't interact with him. I met him for the first time during the film. He was chilled out. The minute we met, the ice broke.

There was a certain trust. We weren't in competition and we weren't insecure. He wasn't insecure that the film was called Tumhari Sulu.

Your last release Begum Jaan did not do well. Were you disappointed?

It's always disappointing.

But thankfully, this time, it didn't feel it much because the movie released on April 13 and, the next day, I had to start my sittings for Tumhari Sulu. We began shooting the film on April 26. So there was no time to think.

I thought to myself that I should always do this. On the day one of my films release, I should start the prep for my next movie (laughs).

I always hope the films do well though I don't have a figure in my head.

Do you agree that content is king?

Content isn't the king, it's the queen!

I feel very, very blessed about the audience's love and expectations from me.

Today, more than ever, there is no one type of a film working. You have Judwaa 2 andGolmaal Again on one side and you have Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Bareilly Ki Barfi on the other. Then, you have Newton and Lipstick Under My Burkha as well. All the films are completely different.

People aren't saying they will watch only this genre or actor. They are demanding good content.

Do you believe that promotions help in bringing in the audiences?

Actually, promotions don't bring in audiences.

People watch the trailer and decide if they want to watch the film. Promotions are a way of hammering into people's minds that we are coming on so and so date. This is so that, if they like the trailer, then they will land up in the theatre.

I don't think promotions serve any other purpose and people are understanding it slowly.

I enjoy promoting a film but we should stop doing it. It has become too much. It is the same thing over and over again.

I feel you don't need to promote anymore films today. Doing 20 interviews and talking about my character isn't exciting. During Lage Raho Munnabhai, getting a Sanjay Dutt talk about his character was a big thing. Now, we are everywhere.

But actors and producers feel insecure. They feel that what if the promotions have the slightest impact...

Most stars are tired of promotions but, if they don't do it and the film fails, they feel kar lena chahiye tha (should have done it).

How was it grooving to the recreated version of Sridevi's Hawa hawai?

We haven't recreated it. It is impossible to recreate a Sridevi song. I was happy I got to do it because, all my life, I have danced to Hawa hawai. It is an energetic song on which you want to dance. And whether you like it or no, you cannot help but think of Sridevi.

I remember Shekhar Kapur's quote at that time. My sister told me Shekhar Kapur had said, 'I didn't know what to shoot -- Sridevi's face or feet because if I did a close up of her feet, I realised I was missing out on her face and vice versa'.

I wonder what would it be like to be on the sets of that film. If there was a time machine, I would want to go back in time and visit the sets of Mr India and watch Sridevi dance.

We plan to show the song to her.

I have told her that I am not recreating your song, just paying tribute to you. She was very happy. She is so gentle and lovely.

What was your husband Siddharth Roy Kapur's reaction to the trailer of Tumhari Sulu?

He loved the trailer and me in it. He hasn't seen the film yet. I have and I think it's good (smiles, taps the table saying, 'Touch wood!').

What's next?

I haven't decided. I was reading scripts until two weeks ago. I will take a call after Tumhari Sulu releases. I am a little torn between two films -- that's always the case with me.

There were reports of you being approached to play Indira Gandhi in a film. Any truth to it?

I was approached a long time ago but I said no. Unless the permissions are sorted, I will not invest that kind of time and energy in the film. It will be painful and heartbreaking if it doesn't release.

I am dying to play Indira Gandhi.

Elli AvrRam Turning Comfortable In Hindi

Just when people were casting aspersions on her ability to speak in Hindi, Elli AvrRam is all set to shock her detractors with her debut in the South. The actress will reprise Lisa Haydon's role from 'Queen' in the Tamil and Kannada remake of the Kangana Ranaut hit.

What's more, Elli will be shooting the two South Indian versions simultaneously, scene by scene. Interestingly, she is also learning French, as Lisa's character had quite a few lines in that language in the Hindi film.

Elli says, "Since I didn't know French, I auditioned in my mother tongue Swedish and English for the part. I won't copy anyone and will treat the character in my own style. I've already started training in Tamil, Kannada and French. It's a fun process and I am enjoying every bit of it."

The actress is also hosting a reality show on which she converses in Hindi. Looks like she isn't going to let criticism deter her from learning multiple languages.
