Big B felicitated at 11th Mumbai Film Festival

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was felicitated a Lifetime Achievement award for completing 40 years in the entertainment industry at the 11th Mumbai Film Festival. Receiving the award from Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Bachchan thanked the noted directors who recognised his talent and the Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) for giving him the award. "I am thankful to every director like Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra who helped me pave my way to where I am today. I am also thankful to MAMI for this honour," said Big B. His oeuvre ranges from rib-tickling comedies to tearjerkers to subtle, nuanced performances in art-house films. It can be said without doubt that there is nothing in acting that Bachchan hasn’t tried. "I have given almost two-thirds of my life to the Indian film industry. I remember in 1968 I had appeared for a screen test whose result never came out. Then in 1969 director Khwaj Ahmad Abbas gave me a break in his film ‘Saat Hindustani’ and my journey started," added Bachchan.

Veteran Bollywood actor Dev Anand’s production house Navketan Films was felicitated for completing 60 years.

The prize distribution ceremony started with Mumbai Young Critics Jury Award, which was given to "Whisper With the Wind" directed by Sahram Alidi.

After a weeklong exposure to international cinema, 20 young critics viewed 27 movies from the two categories, International Competition and Above the Cut. After watching and re-watching the selected films, and with constant discussions, arguments and debates, "Whisper With the Wind" was finally selected.

In the category of Dimension Mumbai Competition, the Silver Gateway of India award was given to "Sagar Setu" directed by Chandni Arora and Archana Phadke.

Silver Gateway of India for the Second Best Film in Dimensions Mumbai-Short Film Competition was given to "Mumbai Lego" directed by Sahil Shah.

Bollywood director Yash Chopra and lyricist Prasoon Joshi awarded the Golden Gateway of India award to the director of "Dominic Murphy".

Danish actress Paprika Steen won the Silver Gateway of India award for the best actress for her performance in the film "Applause".

Greek director Theo Angelopoulos won the International Lifetime Achievement award. His film "The Dust of Time" closed the fest.

The audience choice award went to Amit Rai’s "Road to Sangam".

Beyonce Knowles bags three prizes at MTV awards

Singer Beyonce Knowles scooped three prizes at the MTV Europe Music Awards at a ceremony in Berlin marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall that once divided the city.

She received prizes for best female, best song ("Halo") and best video on one of pop music’s biggest nights outside the United States.

"I have to dedicate this award to all the other beautiful artists," Beyonce said after being named best female, the second of her three prizes. "Thank you MTV for this wonderful honor."

To coincide with MTV’s awards show, Irish rockers U2 treated 10,000 fans to a free concert in front of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, where the music channel’s first Europe Music Awards were held in 1994.

Lead singer Bono performed hits such as "One," "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Beautiful Day" during a 30-minute set and greeted the crowd in German with the words: "Berlin, Du bist wunderbar."

Hours later he was at the O2 World concert venue to pick up the best live act award on behalf of the band.

Beyonce’s husband, hip hop star Jay-Z, was also a winner, topping the best urban act category.

Best male act went to Detroit rapper Eminem, who thanked his supporters in a video message.

The winners are chosen by MTV viewers online, and the music channel, part of Viacom, said more than 100 million votes were cast in 2008. As the list of winners this year underlined, the MTV Europe Music Awards tend to be dominated by big U.S. names.

One of the few exceptions was Germany’s Tokio Hotel, beating the likes of Black Eyed Peas and Kings of Leon to take the best group award.

Green Day, who performed the opening song on the night, were named best rock act.

The biggest losers on the night were Nashville-based Kings of Leon, who led the field with five nominations but came away empty-handed.

New Yorker Lady Gaga, renowned as much for her extravagant outfits as for her electro-dance-pop, was the only other act to garner five nominations. She won the best new act category.

US singer Katy Perry, hosting the awards for the second year in a row, had promised a show inspired by the "Cabaret" film with Liza Minnelli, set in 1930s Berlin, and did not disappoint.

She appeared on stage in a bowler hat, bow tie, bodice and thigh-high boots, and performed a routine on chairs with eight cabaret dancers as glitter rained down on the stage.

Colombian pop star Shakira showed up in a glittery mini dress, black knee-length boots and long, blond locks to perform her hit "Did It Again," while British chart-topper Leona Lewis wore a flowing black gown for her rendition of "Happy."

A video tribute was paid to the late king of pop Michael Jackson during the show.

Courteney Cox to design jewellery for charity

Friends star Courteney Cox and husband actor David Arquette have teamed up with a US jewellery manufacturer, whose designs are inspired by India, to create their own line for charity.

Satya jewellery have collaborated with the celebrity couple to raise money for kids suffering from epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a rare genetic condition that affects the skin.

"There is a beautiful child named Brendon, the son of one of our dear friends, Andrea Pett Joseph, who was born with epidermolysis bullosa. We were not aware of the condition until it affected us personally but once we got to know this incredible child we wanted to do whatever we could to help," Arquette said.

"I think becoming a parent redefines your understanding of love and compassion. Beyond spirituality, it is about being a good person and doing what you can to make a difference and make this world a better place. It is important to do positive things in your life," he added.

Kirstie Alley takes weight-loss battle back to TV

Kirstie Alley is to parlay her lengthy weight-loss battle into a US TV series for what the actress called in a Twitter message a "very funny docu about me losing weight, raising unpretentious kids, and biz."

The untitled reality show, to be aired on the A&E cable network next year, will follow Alley’s life as a single mom at home with her teenage children as she launches a new weight-loss program.

Alley, 58, starred in the TV comedy "Cheers" and in the satirical 2005 show "Fat Actress" about an overweight actress trying to make her way in diet-obsessed Hollywood.

Her weight had then ballooned to about 200 lbs (91 kg) and she was later hired as the spokeswoman for U.S. weight-loss program Jenny Craig and lost about 75 lbs (34 kg) before regaining much of it.

Alley told fans on her Twitter account that she did not like before-and-after weight photos, and said the show would show her real weight loss journey.

"I hope it’s not like any real show you’ve ever seen. That’s my goal. I hate reality shows, so this outta be a REAL challenge," Alley said.

Priyanka Chopra serious about social responsibilities

Former Miss World and the reigning queen of Bollywood, Priyanka Chopra’s commitment towards social causes is as celebrated as her acting prowess. The svelte actress, who is always in news for her hectic schedule recently shot a documentary to create social awareness about leprosy.

The documentary is shot for ‘Alert India’, which is a thirty years old organization that has been closely associated with the disease. While talking to a news daily, Veera Rao, the director of ‘Alert India’ said, “We got in touch with Priyanka for the documentary and she agreed to do it immediately. We will be presenting the documentary on November 5 at a charity dinner that we have organised.”

It is believed that the documentary was originally to be shot in English but it was Priyanka who insisted that they opt for a Hindi version too. Priyanka maintained, “I felt that having a documentary in English would be good to create awareness among kids in schools, colleges and cities, but to make the appeal wider we had to shoot in Hindi. That way we can reach out to rural pockets as well, where people need to be told about the wrong notions that they have regarding this disease.”

The actress further added, “I take my social responsibilities very seriously, and believe that when you really want to go something you always find time for it. If I can help a good cause in anyway by supporting it, I have always been able to find the time.”

Liz Hurley says No to London life for son

Elizabeth Hurley no longer wants to stay in London because her young son Damian feels “cooped up” in the city.

The 44 year old British beauty had acquired a sprawling estate in Gloucestershire, England six years ago so she could holiday in the countryside with hubby Arun Nayar and her seven year old son.

Although, Hurley has been living in London for years, she has now made a permanent move to Gloucestershire.

"I bought a farm about six years ago. We used to do London in the week, with my son at school there, and go every weekend but we got very stressed by it and in the end we just thought, ‘It’s so beautiful and Damian’s so much happier down here’”, said the actress.

"He loves the fresh air and running around outside, because he was so cooped up in London, so we made the big decision last Easter and moved down there full time.”

Hurley further added: "It’s a big chance for a city girl, but I love it. It’s where my son’s supposed to be. It’s a little harder for me and my husband but it’s worth it".

Rihanna to give interview about Chris Brown’s assault

The network says the pop star’s one-on-one with Diane Sawyer will air Thursday and Friday on "Good Morning America" and Friday evening on the news magazine "20/20."

Brown’s attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna occurred in February. He was sentenced in August to five years probation, six months of community labor and a year of domestic violence counseling after he pleaded guilty to felony assault.
